Gary Peterson

“That was my first introduction to where I saw it was an organized thing and that people really did need to come together. Otherwise, the medical profession, or the school system, or whatever else was going to make the decision for you. “

Gary Peterson contracted polio at the age of six and spent years in and out of hospitals, operating rooms, and physical therapy sessions. Always a rambunctious kid, he continued to be physically active throughout his childhood and adult life. Though he lived and worked in central California, he met many of Nevada County’s disability rights advocates through wheelchair sports tournaments. Gary eventually moved to Nevada County, where he chaired the Nevada County Wheelchair Sports Association board and worked as an independent living specialist and benefits counselor at FREED Center for Independent Living.
